Understanding 5dBi Gain

A 0dBi antenna radiates equally in all directions — it’s a reference point, not a real antenna. A 3dBi antenna doubles effective radiated power in the horizontal plane by compressing the radiation pattern vertically. A 5dBi antenna compresses it further — more signal goes out horizontally where you need it, less is wasted radiating skyward. In practical terms, a 5dBi antenna gives you noticeably better range on flat terrain and across valleys compared to a 3dBi unit. On hilly terrain the gain advantage is less pronounced, but still present for most mobile-to-mobile paths.

Installation

Thread the PL-259 base onto your SO-239 mount socket. Connect the coaxial feedline. Adjust angle to vertical using the mount’s angle adjustment if using a gutter bracket. No tools required for antenna fitment — mount installation varies by bracket type.
