Mazda Demio Alternator Overrunning Clutch Pulley – 6PK (2007+)

Modern alternators don’t use a solid fixed pulley — they use an overrunning alternator pulley (OAP), also called an alternator clutch pulley or decoupler pulley. This one-way clutch mechanism allows the alternator to freewheel momentarily during engine deceleration events, absorbing the drivebelt shock load that would otherwise cause belt slap, squeal, and premature alternator bearing wear.

When the overrunning clutch wears out, the one-way mechanism fails and the pulley either locks solid (removing the decoupling function and causing belt noise and vibration) or freewheels in both directions (causing charging failure). Replacing the pulley restores correct alternator operation and eliminates the associated belt noise.

Fitment

Designed for the Mazda Demio from 2007 onwards with a 6-rib (6PK) serpentine belt. The Mazda Demio DE and DJ generations are both common Japanese imports in NZ — confirm your alternator brand and pulley outer diameter match before ordering. The 6PK designation refers to the belt rib count only, not universal fitment across all Demio variants.

How to Confirm Fitment

Remove your existing alternator pulley and check: the pulley outer diameter, the shaft thread size and direction, and the alternator brand stamped on the alternator body (Mitsubishi Electric, Denso, or Bosch are common on Demio variants). Cross-reference these against this pulley’s specs — contact us with your alternator details if unsure.

Symptoms of a Failed Alternator Clutch Pulley

Persistent serpentine belt squeal that doesn’t resolve with a new belt, belt vibration or slapping at idle, alternator noise that changes with engine deceleration, or a belt that wears unevenly or rapidly on one edge.

Installation Note

Overrunning alternator pulleys have a left-hand thread on most applications — they tighten counter-clockwise and loosen clockwise. Using a standard right-hand thread approach will round the shaft. Confirm thread direction before applying torque. Correct installation requires a holding tool to prevent the alternator rotor from spinning — do not attempt to hold the rotor by jamming the fan blades.
