TBOX Diesel Performance Chip – Toyota 1KZ-TE 3.0L (Land Cruiser Prado & HiLux)
The Toyota 1KZ-TE is a 3.0 litre turbocharged diesel fitted to some of the most popular and long-lived 4WDs in the NZ market — the Land Cruiser Prado 90 and 95 Series, the HiLux Surf, and the HiLux N80 in certain markets. It’s a robust engine well-suited to towing and off-road use, but like most factory-calibrated diesels of its era, Toyota mapped it conservatively — leaving torque on the table that the engine is physically capable of producing.
The TBOX chip is a plug-in EFI tuning module that optimises the fuel and boost pressure signals seen by the ECU, improving torque delivery across the mid-range where towing, loaded highway driving, and low-speed off-road work demand it most. No laptop, no workshop, no permanent modification.
Understanding the 1KZ-TE Injection System
The 1KZ-TE uses electronic fuel injection with a turbocharger — it is not a common rail system. The TBOX unit works with the boost and fuel pressure signal on this engine to advance fuelling in the mid-range, improving the torque curve without affecting idle quality or factory emissions compliance. Four Driving Modes
- Eco — optimised fuelling for highway cruise and open road driving where fuel economy is the priority.
- City — balanced response for daily driving with modest torque improvement.
- Sport — stronger mid-range torque for towing, loaded use, and spirited driving.
- Race — maximum fuelling for demanding off-road or high-load situations.
What to Expect
Stronger pull from low revs under tow load, improved throttle response when loaded, and in many cases modest fuel consumption improvement at cruise where the engine works less hard to maintain speed. Results vary with vehicle condition, turbo health, and fuel quality — a worn turbo or injectors will limit what any chip can achieve.
Installation
Plug-in connection to the EFI signal harness. No cutting or permanent modification. Includes in-cab mode switch. Under 30 minutes with basic hand tools. Fully reversible.

Confirm your engine code is 1KZ-TE before ordering. The later 1KD-FTV is a different engine requiring a different chip. Check the engine bay sticker or compliance plate if unsure.
